Inquest taken at Horsham in county Sussex, on Tuesday the first day of April, in the fifth year of the reign of King Henry the Sixth since the conquest before John Iwardeby escheator of the lord king in the aforesaid county by virtue of a writ of the lord King addressed to the same escheator and attached to this inquest by oath of Richard Edwards, Ralph Veske, John Veske, Laurence H-ere, Nigel Broke, Thomas Snapp, Richard Bradebrigge, William atte Lowe, John Pollard, John Champneys, William G-gy, John Clerk. The jurors of the court, say on their oath that John Brewys, knight, named in the said writ held +++++++++++++ on the day that he died the manors of Wistneston, Asshurst, Chiltington, Slaughter, Heene & Erringham with appurtenances jointly with Margaret, lately his wife, still surviving.

Namely to the same John Brewys and Margaret and the heirs of the aforesaid John begotten of the body of aforesaid Margaret in free marriage and in lawful matrimony. On condition that by default of issue of the body of the said John freely begotten of the said Margaret that survive after the death of the said Margaret the said manors with their appurtenances should remain to the aforesaid John Brewys and his heirs by the grant of John Warnecamp, Thomas Restwold, John Pakenham, Peter Wycombe, John Chesham & William Apsley by their indented fine, shown to the said Jurors, whose date is the twelfth day of August in the tenth year of the reign of king Henry the fourth after the conquest, to the aforesaid John Brewys and Margaret therein made, by the name of John Brewys, knight, of the county of Sussex and the aforesaid Margaret, by the name of Margaret his wife, daughter of Thomas Poynings, knight, lord St John, of the aforesaid manors, by the name of the manors of Wiston, Ashurst, Chiltington, Slaughter, Heene & Erringham with their appurtenances, in the same county together with their members, fees, advowsons, parks, warrens, wreck of the sea, waifs, strays & all other liberties and appurtenances whatsoever which they lately had by the gift and grant of the aforesaid John Brewys ++++

In which certain manor of Wiston there is a certain site of the manor with houses built on which is worth nothing per year beyond the expenses and there are there two gardens containing 12 acres of land worth 4d an acre per year and there are there 146 acres of arable land worth 5d an acre per year and there are there 200 acres of pasture worth 1/2d an acre per year and there are there two parks containing 290 acres of land worth nothing beyond the fencing of the aforesaid parks and the upkeep of the game there and there are there 10 pounds and 6 1/2 pence of fixed rents.

In which certain manor of Ashurst there are 80 acres of pasture worth 2d an acre per year 5 acres of meadow worth 12 d an acre per year.

In which certain manor of Chiltington there is a certain site of the manor with houses built on which are worth nothing per year beyond the expenses and there are there 92 acres of arable land worth 4d an acre per year and there are there 52 acres of pasture worth 2d an acre per year and there is there a certain park containing 80 acres of land worth nothing beyond the fencing of the park and the upkeep of game there and there are there 23 acres of underwood worth 1d an acre per year.

In which certain manor of Slaughter there are 200 acres of pasture worth 2d an acre per year and there are there six pounds 6s 1/2 pence of fixed rents.

In which certain manor of Heene there is a certain site of the manor with houses built on which are worth nothing per year beyond the expenses and there is there one garden containing half an acre of land worth 4d per year and there are there 61 acres of arable land worth 6d an acre per year and there are there 26 acres of pasture worth 2d an acre per year and there are there 4 acres of meadow worth 6d an acre per year and there are there 5 pounds 11 shillings 2 1/2 pence of fixed rents.

And in which certain manor of Erringham there is a certain site of the manor with houses built on which are worth nothing per year beyond the expenses and there are there 80 acres of arable land worth 3d an acre per year and there are there 200 acres of pasture worth 1/4 d an acre per year.

And finally the aforesaid jurors say that the aforesaid manors of Wiston, Ashurst, Chiltington, Slaughter, Heene and Erringham are held from John, Duke of Norfolk, as of his Barony of Bramber by knight service and that John Brewys, knight, named in the said writ, died on the Tuesday next before the feast of Saint Nicholas last passed and they say that Beatrix, lately wife of Hugh Shirley, knight, is the sister of the same John Brewys and his nearest heir because the same John Brewys, named in the said writ, died without an heir issuing of his body and that the said Beatrix is sixty years of age and more and they say that the aforesaid John Brewys, named in the said writ, did not hold anything other ..(in chief).. of the lord king nor of anyone else in demesne, nor in service in the aforesaid county on the said day that he died.

In testimony of which matter the aforesaid jurors have set their seals. Dated with the day place and year aforesaid.
