Note 6.6

The Journey Through Wales by Gerald of Wales (translated by Lewis Thorpe, Penguin Books, 1978) page 77, tells this story of "what happened, in the reign of Henry I, King of the English, to the castellan of Radnor castle, in the territory of Builth, which is not far away, being adjacent to his own lands, which he himself had conquered". This is clearly Philip de Braose. Gerald of Wales was a personal friend of Philip's grandson William, who read and endorsed some of Gerald's books. Though strange, it is likely that the family also believed the story to be true.

See notes 6.1, 6.2 and 6,3 for evidence of the date of Philip de Braose's death. He last appeared in a charter of 1134 and his son William had succeeded by 1139 at the latest.
