Taken together,
historians present a complex interpretation of Philip de Braose's
travels, which is unfortunately far from conclusive. I believe
there is evidence that Philip attended the First Crusade, leaving
in 1096 and returning in Autumn 1100. He also seems to have travelled
to Jerusalem as a pilgrim after 1125 and to have returned safely.
Philip's final trip to the Holy Land, where he was guided sightless
into battle and fell according to Gerald of Wales, took place
before 1143 and maybe before 1139. Philip's son William appears
in a charter tentatively dated 1140, holding land on the Welsh
Marches. William confirmed his father's gifts to Saint Florent
Abbey in 1144 by which time Philip must surely have died.
